Testimonials

I find my college a stimulating and creative working environment. It has always supported me in my professional development.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my first year of teaching at my sixth form college. My placement at a local secondary school has also given me an understanding of students' learning styles and needs.

I have had the opportunity to enhance my skills through the staff development programme. It is extremely rewarding to be part of such a successful sixth form college where resources are widely available and the students  so enthusiastic.

Working in Sixth Form Colleges

Sixth form colleges are currently the most successful providers of post-16 education.  In our region, good practice is normal and students enjoy high levels of success.  There is breadth in the curriculum and equality of opportunity for students whether they find education and training challenging or are very able students.  Working in a Wessex Group sixth form college is a rewarding and career enhancing opportunity with considerable scope for career progression and development alongside colleagues from partner colleges.

The 14 sixth form colleges in the Wessex Group of Sixth Form Colleges are all non-selective and provide a distinctive form of education for students who are primarily aged between 16 and 19.

Joining a Wessex Group sixth form college

Working in a Wessex Group sixth form college provides you with a host of opportunities to develop your skills, career and professionalism.  In addition, you’ll receive the support you need at the beginning of your career through a programme of Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) support, training and networking events which complement local authority programmes.

We can offer you:

  • an induction for NQTs which is transferable to secondary schools if you have passed a secondary PGCE
  • the chance to work in a learning environment with a huge range of curriculum subjects taught
  • the chance of promotion within your college or within Wessex Group colleges
  • a leadership development programme which has a national reputation and attracts ambitious future and current leaders
  • access to a subject- or function-based inter-college network or support to start your own
  • a well-resourced teaching and learning environment with an ethos of excellence
  • access to childcare provision in some colleges
  • a concentration of resources that smaller school sixth forms would find it hard to match
  • staff social events
  • access to a fitness centre in most colleges.
